I started painting many years ago, but have been only
working in transparent watercolor for about 8 years. My biggest challenge
has been
spending enough time to develop the craft with my rigorous work and global
travel schedule. However, I have recently retired from corporate life and
am starting to spend more time studying and practicing. I have only been
able to get a few paintings done per year, but now I expect that to
change.
My training has been primarily self-taught. I have not had an art class
since grade school, but I have studied with some of the best watercolorist
today.
I have attended workshops by Tony Couch, Tom Lynch, and Tony van
Hasselt. I have studied all the videos from Ron Ranson and really like his
simple style. Hopefully my work shows some of their techniques.
I actually practice by partially copying some of the works of these
great painters. These paintings are not for sale, but they sure give me a
sense of accomplishment to see them come to life.
Each of these painters have very different techniques but I have
learned something from each one. Tony Couch works wet-into-wet, which is a
challenge for beginning watercolor students.
All of these paintings are on Arches 140# Cold Pressed paper. Sizes are
10"x14" |

Inspired by
Tony Couch

I find that I have the most success with the techniques of Tony Couch. Here are
three Tony-Couch- Inspired copies I made this year
(2002).

Inspired by Ron Ranson

Ron Ranson has such a simple style that it looks very easy, but it
takes special talent to do what he does with his limited 7-color palette and only
three brushes. Here are three I tried to copy of water scenes, which seems
to be a favorite theme of Ron Ranson. |
